Blue magic - 7/10
I like how subtle, lo-fi and understated the song is
Feet to the fire - 7/10
I hated this at first because of the screeching saw synth. But it grew on me a lot
Suspended - 8/10
This song is a masterpiece and one of those tracks that really shows off the Neptunes musicianship. The lyrics blow my mind still because I can’t tell if it’s a song about her dying? Or just tripping? Or sleeping? I don’t know. Since learning it was originally made for bjork it also made me appreciate it more
Run away - 7/10
It’s just a fun song - nothing more to it than that. I like it.
In Lemon you can hear a weird synth kind of like bells, during rihanna’s verse. And it feels like that’s bleed through from her headphones because it’s soooo quiet it surely can’t be part of the final song?
Still remember when this album leaked... Soph year in college, I burned the CD and put in my stereo & programmed it to loudly play "Young, Fresh N' New" as my alarm for important early morning classes, football practices etc... I'd be out of bed so fast to turn it off! Still love the song/album/Kelis despite it scaring me out of bed so many times.
this and wanderland - neptunes at their peak - never reached that level of complexity in terms of instrumentation again - you can hear the effort they put in it - nothin else and take it from here are benchmarks in their body of work.. damn i even love the timberland tracks - they had this unique chemistry.. one of the few albums you can hear all the way through..i wish they could do this again somehow ..
