  • RE: GESAFFELSTEIN - Blast Off (ft Pharrell Williams) March 8th

@BabyMilo Yeah I see what you mean, and I usually hate when people say that too but I’m not really saying “stay in your lane”. I’m saying I don’t like that he’s trying to imitate what daft punk did. He’a even working with the exact same artists (Weeknd, Pharrell). It comes across as super calculated and not really like a true creative expression. But who knows - I don’t know the guy. I’m viewing it cynically.

Yeah I totally get that it was negative, and I was in a bad mood and feeling cynical this morning when I wrote it. The Cassius thing is a comparison because they’re both from same background and following the same path. And Cassius are two guys I love btw, but it comes across as inauthentic when they moved into working with P and Ryan Tedder and whoever. It’s true gessafelstein is free to do what he wants, he isn’t here to please me.

I see what you’re saying about people holding others back. That’s 100% not what I meant (though tbh the coachella comment does come off that way without context). I’d like for any artist I love to become huge and successful. I’m not one of those guys that thinks something is precious and should be hidden and I wouldn’t want to hinder a persons career at all - I’m just saying I want the music to be good. And yeah true I made an assumption it was gonna be bad. So I admit that. But no way would I wish to prevent someone being successful.

I’m not gonna take back my comment but I guess I should at least wait and hear the song before making judgement and assuming that it’s gonna be bad.

    @Dookie

That's my point exactly, to start off receiving credit, then to not receive credits makes no sense, most producers start off receiving no credit (ghost producing), then work their way up to being recognized, not the other way around...lol

Chad doesn’t make sense as a person. There’s wilder business shit than not getting credit that’s happened lately but I’m not writing that on a forum. He doesn’t understand business

Gessafflstein is a god but nahhh I’m not fucking with this change in tone.

To see him start working with Pharrell and the weekend, and playing coachella is lame tbh

It didn’t work for Cassius and it won’t work for him. He should stay true to his roots

@darrenlaking that’s what I was trying to explain above. They changed it so chad only gets song writers credit if he actually wrote the song or created the beat with Pharrell before the artist worked on it(or at the same time). If he comes in AFTER and changes things then he doesn’t get songwriter. Just producer, or additional producer, or sometimes nothing at all (but he’ll be paid).

P deserves producer of the year by himself because most of the projects he was nominated for were mainly by him solo with the exception of JT. And that other year he won, whoaaa he was on fire then, and it really was all pharrell by himself.

Can somebody please tell me if there is any evidence of Chad's work on Hardy Candy, I mean I always thought it was P using the "produced by Neptunes" moniker...

And all my research points to this...As much as I love Chad, I hate it when Pharrell gets short-changed in the credit department, because we assume when it's just him it's gotta sound like "something's missing" when the truth is there are plenty of Pharrell-only tracks that sound good as is...

I'm not trying to start a debate or bad mouth Chad, cuz as a forum OG, you guys know that I love the both of them together as much as everyone else, but I just wanted to know if anyone has any proof or links to Chad's involvement in that project, so I can be informed

    Long message coming up...

The biggest evidence is what Madonna said in the message Andre shared above. It’s coming right from her mouth so I don’t understand why you would say you’re not convinced? Also the production is waaaay too complex for P solo (sorry P). A song like “She’s not me” complete with its crazy ending is deffo not something he could do at that time. Also the easiest way to tell is that the album says produced by the Neptunes.

Chad got more credit on Commons album because he was actually the lead producer on that record. NERD and common were on tour and common and chad would make songs every night, but P would just be in and out real quick coming up with ideas, and throwing things in and leaving. But chad and common would be up all night finishing the songs. So that’s why he has that “C.Hugo” in the credits.

There’s a a famous chad interview from back in the day at the exact period when the Neptunes split (I think it was with vibe or Fader?) and chad says something along the lines of “we’re changing the way we do things, now you’ll see who does what”. Also at that same time “StarTrak” got angry at me on the star trak forum b/c I said chad was best and whoever represented the label wrote some long message about how Pharrell is a songwriter and producer, and chad is just a producer.

So it doesn’t take much to assume that something happened behind the scenes where they agreed to change the way they credited things at that period of time. But it’s also clear that chad didn’t give af except for projects with big artists.

Aaaannnnnnmnd finally. I was working with Chad and his manager when they were working on Little Big Town, NERD, Justin and Ariana (chad didn’t really do much on Ariana). Chad’s manager was getting so angry, venting to me and saying “Chad is too nice. He’d make a beat right now and let you say that you made it”

Soooo yeah. Long message. But I’m sure you get my point. P’s done tons of 100% solo productions. But if you get the feeling that Chad’s worked on something, then he has!. Even when it says “whistling by chad Hugo”. Be realistic, do you really think he came to the studio just to whistle? Or just turns up to mix a song? Nope of course not. He worked on the whole song but pharrell is the brand name and the guy in charge (at the time) and so he gets the credit. For example, there’s a non-chad version of “I Know” that was made for Jay Sean, and it doesn’t have all those synths and emotion to it. But b/c P already made the initial song by himself, he got the production credit when Chad came in and upgraded it for Jay-Z.

Kk long message but I just wanted to share that stuff because I know one thing Chad struggles with is stepping up and getting the recognition he deserves. So I’ll do it for him. Pharrell is a genius and the main driving force, of course. I’m not talking bad about him.

@mikitoramirez yeah that’d be interesting. P said “She Wants To Move” was him trying to make a song in the style of The White Stripes

@Mavis how can you not want another Neptunes presents type album??? Mike Will is basically doing his version of clones with all these new rappers. Just imagine a 2019 clones!!?? With all the artist that owe pharrell favours. And a couple Pharrell verses (like neon guts/nice)

Why don’t I want it? Because The Neptunes are producers, not artists. I’d love to see them build up their reputation as hit producers again before doing an album focussed on themselves.

I hope they’re working on random songs for a bunch of different artists. I really don’t want a “Neptunes presents” type album, and I don’t want a majority-Neptunes produced album by any artist.

I want it like the days back when EVERYONE had just one The Neptunes song on their album.

@KevinMorow yeah everything @bigmac2098 said. She’s got that revlon contract, that Adidas contract, modelling agency contact, she’s moved to London to work on a100million dollar+ movie out later this year or whenever. She’s become a muse to Diplo. She’s chilling with Dua Lipa and Adwoah. Being invited to all these fashion weeks around the world.

I don’t really know her but it seems like her career has totally transformed off the back of Lemon and the tour.
