@darrenlaking said in Pharrell and Chad in the studio with... (2019):
Can somebody please tell me if there is any evidence of Chad's work on Hardy Candy, I mean I always thought it was P using the "produced by Neptunes" moniker...
And all my research points to this...As much as I love Chad, I hate it when Pharrell gets short-changed in the credit department, because we assume when it's just him it's gotta sound like "something's missing" when the truth is there are plenty of Pharrell-only tracks that sound good as is...
I'm not trying to start a debate or bad mouth Chad, cuz as a forum OG, you guys know that I love the both of them together as much as everyone else, but I just wanted to know if anyone has any proof or links to Chad's involvement in that project, so I can be informed
Long message coming up...
The biggest evidence is what Madonna said in the message Andre shared above. It’s coming right from her mouth so I don’t understand why you would say you’re not convinced? Also the production is waaaay too complex for P solo (sorry P). A song like “She’s not me” complete with its crazy ending is deffo not something he could do at that time. Also the easiest way to tell is that the album says produced by the Neptunes.
Chad got more credit on Commons album because he was actually the lead producer on that record. NERD and common were on tour and common and chad would make songs every night, but P would just be in and out real quick coming up with ideas, and throwing things in and leaving. But chad and common would be up all night finishing the songs. So that’s why he has that “C.Hugo” in the credits.
There’s a a famous chad interview from back in the day at the exact period when the Neptunes split (I think it was with vibe or Fader?) and chad says something along the lines of “we’re changing the way we do things, now you’ll see who does what”. Also at that same time “StarTrak” got angry at me on the star trak forum b/c I said chad was best and whoever represented the label wrote some long message about how Pharrell is a songwriter and producer, and chad is just a producer.
So it doesn’t take much to assume that something happened behind the scenes where they agreed to change the way they credited things at that period of time. But it’s also clear that chad didn’t give af except for projects with big artists.
Aaaannnnnnmnd finally. I was working with Chad and his manager when they were working on Little Big Town, NERD, Justin and Ariana (chad didn’t really do much on Ariana). Chad’s manager was getting so angry, venting to me and saying “Chad is too nice. He’d make a beat right now and let you say that you made it”
Soooo yeah. Long message. But I’m sure you get my point. P’s done tons of 100% solo productions. But if you get the feeling that Chad’s worked on something, then he has!. Even when it says “whistling by chad Hugo”. Be realistic, do you really think he came to the studio just to whistle? Or just turns up to mix a song? Nope of course not. He worked on the whole song but pharrell is the brand name and the guy in charge (at the time) and so he gets the credit. For example, there’s a non-chad version of “I Know” that was made for Jay Sean, and it doesn’t have all those synths and emotion to it. But b/c P already made the initial song by himself, he got the production credit when Chad came in and upgraded it for Jay-Z.
Kk long message but I just wanted to share that stuff because I know one thing Chad struggles with is stepping up and getting the recognition he deserves. So I’ll do it for him. Pharrell is a genius and the main driving force, of course. I’m not talking bad about him.
